TEMPLE SISTERS

Icon Series

The Temple Sisters explore the idea of how powerful icons and important symbols can disintegrate in a climate of poverty, political disorder and neglect. The images are found beneath peeling paint, wallpaper, and stucco-like paste to evoke a sense of accidental preservation amidst political upheaval, social unrest and the inevitable progression of time. The works are meant to evoke a sense of the forgotten, hidden and obscured. But in the context of current events, the works also consider icons as images of hope and redemption. Ashlee Temple adds, “Despite decay, the images can still inspire, inviting restoration.”
